An Introduction

LLAMA

Carol Fairbanks

My name is Carol and I’m a transfer student to the Visualization program at Texas A&M! This is (hopefully) my last year at A&M, and I should be graduating this upcoming May.

I was originally a music therapy major at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. For those asking themselves, “Wow music therapy? That sounds interesting, but what is it?” I have a (very practiced) definition for you:

Music therapy is the use of music to achieve non-musical goals in terms of rehabilitation, improvement in motor and cognitive skills, and/or improvement in the general disposition of the client.

I grew up always loving music and I always thought that I wanted a career in music. Music therapy seemed like a happy marriage of having a job where I used music and… well, having a steady job. Turns out, I just didn’t like the field too much, even if I still loved music a lot. My year at William Carey still served me very well though, as I grew a lot on a personal level, I made many good friends, and more importantly that year helped lead me to the Viz program.

I became very active in the theatre design program at William Carey which led me to discover how much I enjoyed design and art in general–something I had never really had the chance to explore as I was always wrapped up in music. In looking for a more practical job application for my newfound passion, I was recommended the Viz program and quickly fell in love.

Since being in Viz, I’ve discovered how much I enjoy the graphic design field–especially in terms of layout and web design. I’d also really love to explore more typography.

One of my other big hobbies/art ventures is making costumes and clothing, so I’m excited to (hopefully) explore some interactive applications of garments.
